Can You Transport a Car Without MOT or Tax in the UK?

Transporting is different from driving

Problems arise when part of the plan involves driving the car on a public road—for example, driving it away from an auction, meeting the transporter elsewhere or unloading on the road and driving to a property.

Can you drive a car without an MOT?

In Great Britain, the Highway Code states that you must not drive a vehicle without an MOT certificate when one is required. The limited exceptions include driving to a pre-arranged MOT test or to a garage for repairs required for the test.

That exception is not a general permission to drive an unsafe car. The vehicle must still be roadworthy, the journey must genuinely relate to the arranged test or relevant repairs, and the driver must have appropriate insurance. If there is any doubt about safety or legality, use a transporter.

Can you drive an untaxed or SORN vehicle to an MOT?

DVLA guidance confirms that a SORN vehicle can be driven to a pre-arranged MOT appointment. This is a narrow exception. Keep evidence of the booking and use a direct, reasonable route. The vehicle must still be insured and roadworthy.

Do not use the exception to collect a newly purchased car, take it home, test-drive it or make unrelated stops. If the car cannot safely or lawfully complete the journey, transport it instead.

What about insurance?

An MOT appointment does not remove the need for appropriate insurance. GOV.UK also warns that driving an unroadworthy vehicle may invalidate insurance. Confirm cover with the insurer before any road movement; assumptions about another policy or “driving other cars” extensions are risky.

The MOT has expired and the vehicle’s roadworthiness is uncertain.
